Innovation Barn

Description: A public sustainability and community hub inside a 36,000-square-foot former horse barn, combining interactive exhibits, circular-economy projects, gathering spaces, an on-site café, public art, and a large outdoor courtyard. Visitors can explore working projects involving plastics, composting, aquaponics, textiles, food systems, recycling, urban gardening, and material reuse through free self-guided visits, organized tours, workshops, volunteer opportunities, and community events. Indoor tables and the landscaped courtyard provide places to sit, meet, work, eat, or enjoy coffee while exploring the facility. The building serves as the flagship project of Envision Charlotte and a hands-on demonstration of how discarded materials can be reused, repaired, recycled, or transformed into new products.

Comments: I've fallen asleep here sitting outside in a rocking chair, reading a good book, and gazing ever so often at the great view of Uptown. The outdoor seating is very well done. Most of it has shade, and there's plants here and there, and turf instead of dirt or gravel, so you could even sit on the ground if you wanted to. Great place to take a book on a warm morning and just chill. Saturday mornings in particular are peaceful here.

The cafe area inside has a good amount of seating as well, including a few spots where you can plop down on your laptop, certainly remote work friendly. Industrial chic vibes to the whole space, but in a good way rather than annoying, since the Innovation Barn is all about being a local builder, maker, every kind of idea space for the community.

There's a really big fish tank that I like looking at when I visit. And there's a online order only restaurant, in addition to a coffee shop, inside for you to enjoy while you're there. Lovely place, it used to be a horse barn.
