Description: A 98-acre public park centered on a seven-acre lake between Dilworth and Myers Park, with paved trails and greenways, playgrounds, athletic fields, tennis and pickleball courts, picnic shelters and restrooms. Open lawns and recreation areas give visitors room to walk, run, read, picnic, play sports or gather with friends and family. The park connects with Charlotte's greenway network and also includes the Mahlon Adams Indoor Pavilion and a bandshell. It hosts community events throughout the year, including the long-running Festival in the Park.

Comments: This is basically Charlotte’s unofficial watering hole. Our Central Park, except way smaller, but no less central to the city’s sense of community and culture. Everyone who moves here gets the recommendation to come here at some point for something. To walk, to run, to rollerblade, to attend some event, to meet up with a group. Everything and everyone enjoys Freedom Park.

I’ve seen book clubs, run clubs, writing clubs, church clubs, social clubs, art clubs, every kind of club. People coming together over shared interests use Freedom Park as a place to hang. It’s one big loop with a beautifully maintained pond and pockets of seating all around it, including a nice grass area with a sort of stadium-style seating setup. Then there’s access to Little Sugar Creek Greenway through the trails running around the park.

The warning with this place is that because it’s so great, it gets very crowded during peak days and hours. On any given weekend there’s something going on here. In the mornings there are people working out, groups meeting up, people running, always something. But I’ve actually come here in the middle of the day to work remotely just out in nature. No Wi-Fi, but I hotspot from my phone, and it was pretty chill.

If you're trying to make friends, and are willing to just talk to people or walk up to a group and ask them what they're up to, this is a great place to come hang out. Or if you're into people watching, I can't imagine a better spot in the city than this.
